The Prostate Cancer Screening Problem
Prostate cancer screening using PSA tests is problematic and controversial. There are too many unwarranted biopsies and too much over-treatment. At the same time too many men die from prostate cancer because of late detection and treatment.
The U.S. Preventative Services Task Force has recommended stopping the use of PSA for routine screening. Other major medical organizations disagree. Currently, the choice is between screening poorly and don’t screen.
